Brynne had completely wrecked me. I’d never been simultaneously exhausted and revved up, like being hungover and drunk at the same time.
She’d dozed off in my arms less than five minutes after we’d finished round two. A ridiculous amount of male pride swelled within me, because I’d basically fucked her to sleep.
I was wide awake though. I couldn’t seem to calm my thoughts.
The argument with Scott, being in a different world so far from home, and meeting Brynne… It was messing with my head.
I couldn’t stop staring at her. As I lay on my back with her cradled next to me, the constant discontent I felt all the time had diminished.
It was replaced with something unfamiliar. Something peaceful.
I hadn’t even realized how lonely I was until now.
“My parents got divorced when I was six,” I found myself saying. My voice was barely above a whisper, because I didn’t want to wake Brynne. I shouldn’t have been talking about this. She wasn’t interested in my history, and it was pointless when she couldn’t hear me anyway.
But now that I’d started, I couldn’t stop.
“I remember my mom breaking the news to my brother and me in the car in our driveway. We’d just gotten home from Christmas shopping. I—I cried because I knew it meant my mom and dad wouldn’t live together anymore. That wasn’t the worst part though; that came later. The custody battle was brutal. There was a lot of anger between them and they used us kids to punish each other. We were the ultimate bargaining chip and they didn’t pull any punches in the fight to win. My dad lied to the courts and told them my mom was bipolar. My mom claimed he was an alcoholic. They dragged each other through the mud and they took us with them.”
Lightly brushing my thumb over Brynne’s elbow, I watched for signs she was waking, but she was relaxed, her breathing even. So I continued.
“I think they both felt right in their efforts, you know? I get it—parents want their kids to be with them all the time to protect them and love them. But when a marriage ends, sacrifices have to be made by everyone. My parents weren’t good at compromising during their marriage so naturally, they were terrible at it after. When I was seven, they sat my brother and me down and explained that we might have to choose who we want to live with, that the courts might take that into consideration. And I was terrified. How could I choose between them? No matter what I did, someone I loved was going to get hurt.” I sighed. “Thankfully, it never came to that. Eventually they got shared custody, so there was a lot of back and forth between two homes. When I was eighteen, I found out my dad was the one who wanted the divorce. My mom had wanted to work on things, but he refused. I was so mad I didn’t speak to him for six months.
